AISHE-ALL INDIA SURVEY ON HIGHER EDUCATION

Higher Education is a powerful tool for building a knowledge-based society. The growing size and diversity in Higher Education particularly in terms of institutions, programmes offered, faculty and students has made it necessary for the government to develop a sound database on higher education. It was this vision and necessity that led to the inception of All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE).


AISHE was established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development for conducting an annual web-based survey with an objective to portray the status of higher education in the country. It is the main source of an authentic and comprehensive statistics on the Higher Education scenario in India.

AISHE is a mammoth data and statistics exercise in which data on various aspects of Higher Education are elicited in online mode. The survey is conducted in a timebound manner to identify all the institutions of higher learning in the country and collect data from them on total student enrolment in eight different levels: undergraduate, postgraduate, PhD, MPhil, diploma, PG diploma, certificate, and integrated programmes from Universities, Colleges, Standalone institutions. The survey collects data on several parameters such as number and nature of institutions, student enrolment in higher education. demographic details of students, teaching and non-teaching staff, out-turn, education finance and infrastructure.


Such a vast pool of country-wide data is used to make informed policy decisions for further development of the state of higher education in India. Survey data collected through AISHE is used to compute important indicators of educational development such as Institution Density, Gross Enrolment Ratio, Pupil-teacher ratio, Gender Parity Index, Per Student Expenditure.
