BRIDGE COURSE & ORIENTATION PROGRAMME

Surendranath Law College organizes a Bridge Course & Orientation Programme for the newly-admitted students (First-Semester) students of the B.A.LL.B. Degree course. The Programme is organized during the months of August-September, every year and it is compulsory for all newly-admitted students to attend the entire programme. The purpose of the orientation programme is mani-fold. It is a meticulously designed programme to help students experience a smooth transition to a higher-education degree programme in the field of Law. It is formulated to thoroughly acquaint the students with the five-year law degree course and to provide them with a comprehensive knowledge of the entire college and its academic curriculum.



THE GOALS OF THE BRIDGE & ORIENTATION PROGRAMME ARE AS FOLLOWS

  • The Orientation Programme begins with a Welcome Address delivered by the Head of the Institution, the Vice-Principal. It serves the purpose of introducing students to a new phase of their academic life as a college student and welcoming them into the larger family of Surendranath Law College. The vision, mission, principles, values and culture of the collegeis conveyedto the students so that they wholeheartedly imbibe the ethos of the college that has been preserved for over more than a century.
    • Introduction to the Course Module- Students are given a comprehensive introduction to the course module and the mode of examination and the entire academic curriculum. This serves as the starting point for new students to be introduced to the field of Law. The bridge cum orientation course is designed to provide a conceptual background on key topics and provide a comprehensive overview of the academic curriculum of the five-years BA.LLB course. Lectures are delivered every day for a week to cover several topics that form the foundational tenets in law studies. Theseintroductory lecturesare valuable for students as it targets to create an interest and inner-drive to delve into the challenging yet fascinating world of a professional career in legal studies.
    • Besides law studies, students are also given introductory lectures on compulsory subjects of Sociology. Political Science and Economics in the backdrop of its inter-linkages and practical use in legal education. Students are also lectured on the importance of English Language in Legal Education and the use of library for legal studies.
  • Familiarization with the Faculty, Staff, College Resources, Committees, Cells, Clubs in the Campus - The Bridge & Orientation programme provides a healthy platform of exchange and an opportunity to connect fresh students with faculty members, staff, seniors and their own batch-mates and inculcate a sense of belonging with the college.
    • Students are familiarized on the use of the college website and provided a virtual tour of the structure, organisation and facilities in the college. Detailed information is provided about library resources, sports equipment, common- room & canteen facilities, complaint-box and every other academic and support facilities available for students including specific facilities for girl students in the college.
    • Students are introduced to all the committees, cells and clubs that have been established for participation and overall welfare and holistic growth of students. They are informed about the activities of clubs such as the Moot Court, Debate, Extempore, Quiz, Eco club, Extension Activities, Cultural club and Games and Sports committee; where students can explore and participate in various programmes for an enriching, educative and holistic learning experience.
  • Sensitisation on Statutory Committees & their Purpose -Students are thoroughly informed and educated about the role and functions of statutory committees like the Anti-Ragging Cell, Grievance Redressal Committee, Internal Complaints Committee. Students are encouraged to read about these committees and familiarize themselves about the role and importance of these statutory bodies through the website. They are directed to note the college Helpline numbers as provided in the college website.
  • Information on Financial Support & Benefits-Students are informed about the different financial support networks and benefits available such as the Students’ Credit Card Facility, Principal Welfare Fund, Merit cum Means Freeship, Merit Awards as well as Government scholarships available for SC, ST, OBC, EWS and Minority Students.
  • Address Queries - The Orientation programme also addresses any questions or queries that students might have about the college.
