Human Values:
Values are individual beliefs to which people attach significant worth and by which they organize their life. Love, Peace, Truthfulness, Non-violence and Right Conduct are core Human Values that mould human character and protect ethical values, integrity, mutual-respect, kindness and empathy, encourage civic responsibility and spread harmony.
Professional Ethics:
Professional ethics is defined as a set of attitudes and standards concerned with the value of work. It is a set of values based on hard work, integrity and diligence.
Surendranath Law College places the highest importance in creating a team that is committed to safeguarding and promoting Human Values and Professional ethics, that is rooted in practicing equity, respect, inclusivity and integrity.
As a Law College with a rich legacy to protect and carry forward, the Objectives of Professional Ethics & Human Values have been framed as follows-
- To develop a set of beliefs and practices rooted in Human Values and Professional Ethics.
- To create an awareness on Professional Ethics, Human Values and the Rights of fellow citizens.
- To focus on Character building, Integrity and Civic responsibility.
- To promote Gender Equality and promote gender-sensitive behaviour at all levels.
Institutional Initiatives to Practice and Protect Human Values and Professional Ethics
At Surendranath Law College, the entire team, comprising the head of the institution, teaching faculty and non-teaching staff is committed towards shaping the lives of students through a value system that is rooted in practicing equity, respect, and integrity. The college upholds inclusivity, mutual-respect, fairness, compassion, honesty, perseverance, gender-justice and social justice as an essential work culture that is universal and unconditional. It has consistently taken initiatives to engage students in co-curricular activities and extension activities that are designed innovatively to inculcate ethical values, moral conduct and to develop character.
To uphold the importance of Human Values and Professional ethics, the college strives to develop innovative practices and improve the curriculum (within the ambit of the guidelines prescribed by the university) to make education relevant to contemporary challenges. In this respect, the college has formed various committees that work with real life problems related to the industry or community and society at large such that the values of ethics is balanced with professionalism.

Protection of Women and Children
- Legal camps, road rallies, panel discussions, lectures, debates and speaking competitions have been held to create awareness on sexual harassment, protection of women and children in digital era, Protection of children from sexual offence act, combating gender stereotypes, crimes against women and Child Labour have repeatedly featured as the core issues of our events.

Environmental Protection & Sustainable Development
- The Eco club regularly organises camps to promote the practice of sustainable development and the importance of finite resources among young adults of the college. It has organised camps for plantation drives and plant distribution, Seminars, streets play and dance drama have been held on topics such as eradication of plastic use, importance of forests.

Social Outreach Programmes & Extension Services
- The college has also organised awareness programmes on topics such as drug abuse protection, equal pay for equal work. To impart sensitivity and empathy towards the needy, to impart values of self-less service and build awareness about socio-economic disparities; the college committee on extension activities has also held blood donation camps, food and clothes distribution camps by liaising with NGOs.

Value Education
- The College has also organised courses and seminars on value education including lectures for developing Constitutional values in students.

Legal Aid and Awareness Campaigns
- The formation of the Legal Aid club as an exemplary mechanism for social progress was established with the purpose of imparting clinical legal education as a part of the practical training programme devised by the Bar Council of India and the State Legal Services Authority. The core purpose of forming a legal aid clinic is to mould students into responsible citizens who can contribute to the society at large by upholding the values of good governance and citizens’ democratic participation in the country.
We believe that such initiatives by the college will provide life-enriching knowledge and experience amongst participants and inspire them to carry forward high ideals of moral value and professional ethics in their lifetimes. Together, we aspire to uphold Human Values & Professional Ethics and become the torch-bearers of high ideals, of dutifulness, of purity and of truth as envisioned by the Founding Father, Surendranath Banerjea.
