The Code of Conduct at Surendranath Law College is a set of guidelines and principles that governs the behaviour and actions of students, teachers, and non-teaching staff members within the college community. It is designed to promote a positive learning environment, to foster mutual respect, and to ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone on campus.
Violation of the Code of Conduct may result in disciplinary action, which could include warnings, probation, suspension, or expulsion for students, and reprimands or dismissal for teaching/non-teaching staff members. The college takes allegations of misconduct seriously and is committed to addressing them promptly and fairly.
The Code of Conduct of Surendranath Law College reflects the institution's commitment to creating a respectful, inclusive, and supportive community where all members can thrive academically, professionally and personally. By adhering to these principles; students, teachers, and staff can contribute to the college's mission of providing quality education and fostering intellectual growth and development.
PREAMBLE
This handbook indicates the standard procedures and practices of Surendranath Law College (hereinafter referred to as the ‘College’) for teaching employees, non-teaching employees and students of the college. All must be aware of the Code and know that it is incumbent upon them to abide by it.
JURISDICTION
The college shall have jurisdiction over the conduct of all associated with the college and will take notice of all acts of misconduct, including incidents of ragging and sexual harassment or otherwise, that has taken place in college campus or in any college related activities and functions. The college may also exercise jurisdiction over the conduct which occurs off campus violating these set of rules, when such conduct essentially connects with regular course of business of the institution and, which shall include:
- Any violation of the sexual harassment policy and/or the anti-ragging policy of the college against other students/teachers/employees of the college.
- Physical assault, threats of violence, or conduct that threatens the health or safety of any person including students/teachers/employees of the college.
- Possession or use of weapons, explosives or destructive devices on campus
- Manufacture, sale or distribution of prohibited drugs, alcohol etc. in campus.
- Display of any conduct which has a negative impact or constitutes a nuisance to members of the surrounding off- campus community.
CODE OF CONDUCT FOR TEACHERS
The code of conduct for teachers of Surendranath Law College aims to create an inclusive environment for teaching, learning, and the well-being of students. Key aspects of the code of conduct for teachers include the following.
- Must adhere to a responsible behaviour consistent with societal expectations. They must manage their private affairs in such a manner that shall not be derogatory to the dignity of the profession or of the college, especially while dealing with online digital and or social media communications.
- Is encouraged to prepare himself/herself academically to meet all the challenges and requirements in the pedagogy so that the input may be useful for the student community at large. Every teacher is expected to extend his/her beneficial influence in the holistic development of students and he/she should associate himself/herself actively with extra co- curricular activities which he /she is interested in, or has been assigned to him/her by the college.
- Is encouraged to pursue professional development through participation in conferences, seminars, and workshops to improve their expertise, after obtaining necessary permission from the principal/vice principal/teacher-in-charge.
- Is expected to follow the rules, regulations and circular of the college as well as of U.G.C, Directorate of Higher Education, the Bar Council as and when applicable.
- Teachers are expected to perform their teaching duties, including tutorial, practical, and duties related to seminar/conference/workshop and examinations as assigned by the college, and also actively participate in educational responsibilities such as advising and counselling students.
- Teachers are expected to be regular and punctual to college. If a leave of absence is necessary, the teacher concerned must obtain approval in advance from the principal/vice principal/teacher-in-charge and ensure that alternate arrangements are made for all scheduled classes.
- In case of emergency circumstances, the respective class mentors and the Principal/Vice Principal/teacher-in-charge must be informed by teachers and alternate arrangements must be made to manage the scheduled classes. In case of late arrival to college, the Principal/ Vice Principal/teacher-in-charge should be intimated about the reason at the earliest.
- Teachers should prepare the hour-wise lesson plan of their lectures, once their respective subjects are allotted to them and upload them in the Lesson Plan portal of the college. The same should also be submitted to the principal/vice principal/teacher-in-charge.
- Teachers should make use of ICT, power point presentations etc., as teaching aids and regularly upload study materials in the LMS portal of the college.
- Teachers should identify slow learners in class and pay special attention to their learning needs through remedial classes.
- Teachers should actively participate in professional meetings, seminars, conferences, and maintain active membership in professional academic organizations.
- Teachers are required to respect the rights and dignity of colleagues, students and non-teaching employees, and eliminate any kind of discrimination based on religion, caste, gender, political affiliation, economic status or social background.
- Teachers should treat colleagues with respect, speak respectfully of each other and render mutual assistance for professional betterment.
- Teachers are expected to cooperate in formulating institutional policies, accept responsibilities as committee/cell members, and work towards the betterment of the college.
- Teachers must submit the self-appraisal report, feedback forms, progress report, photographs of the programmes and other relevant documents of the programmes they have organized during academic year to the IQAC coordinator within the stipulated time.
- Engagement of teachers in any act of sexual harassment is strictly prohibited. Authorities will conduct a detailed enquiry upon receiving any such complaint and strict disciplinary action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
- Teachers are expected to contribute to upholding an ethos that reflects the institution's commitment to environmental consciousness.
- Teachers are discouraged from accepting gifts from stakeholders.
CODE OF CONDUCT FOR STUDENTS
- Students shall be regular to college and attend routine classes punctually.
- Students shall not engage in any form of sexual harassment and/or ragging in college. College authorities will conduct a detailed enquiry upon receiving any such complaint and strict disciplinary action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
- In the event, that a student has to discontinue studies for any legitimate reason; such a student may be relieved from the college, subject to a written communication of consent from the principal/ vice principal/teacher-in-charge. In such cases, the student shall be required to clear all pending dues to the college. In the case that a student had joined the college under a scholarship scheme, the same shall be revoked.
- Students shall maintain proper discipline and decorum within the classroom, college premises and library.
- Students shall adhere to all the instructions relating to assignment and project submission issued by the college.
- Students shall uphold academic integrity, respect all teachers, non-teaching staff and fellow-students of the college.
- Students shall participate in mentoring sessions convened by their respective mentors in the college.
- Students shall participate in all academic events and programmes organised by the college.
- Intentionally damaging or destroying college property or property of other students and/or teachers/non-teaching staff is not allowed and will be subject to investigation by the disciplinary committee and appropriate action will be taken.
- Students must not engage in any disruptive activity in a class room, whether class is taken in online or offline mode, or in an event that is sponsored by the college, is subject to punishment.
- Students must keep the identity card issued by the college in possession, and produce it for identification on demand by campus security guards. Inability or refusal to produce the ID, when demanded, can result in disciplinary action.
- Students are advised to wear their uniform prescribed by the college.
PROHIBITIONS FOR STUDENTS
- Smoking within the college campus is strictly prohibited.
- Use of mobile phone, without permission of the teacher, is prohibited in the classroom.
- Students are expected not to interact, on behalf of the college, with media representatives or invite media persons in the campus without the permission of the college authorities.
- Students are not permitted to make audio and video records of lectures in class rooms or of the students, teachers or non-teaching staff without prior permission.
- Students are not permitted to post derogatory comments about other students/teachers/non-teaching staff of the college on social media platforms. Such action will be subject to investigation by the disciplinary committee and appropriate action will be taken.
CODE OF CONDUCT FOR NON-TEACHING STAFF
- Report to duty on time and perform their duty throughout college hours.
- Must not be absent from duty without official approval or approved leave.
- Strictly adhere to the laws and regulations of the college.
- Respect and maintain the hierarchy in the Administration.
- Maintain honesty, integrity and fairness in all activities.
- Must not misappropriate college funds and must not misuse college resources.
- Must not divulge official secrets, mutilate, expunge, conceal, alter or forge official documents/receipts.
- Is expected to treat college property, whether material or intangible, with respect and care.
- Is required to show integrity and professionalism while on duty in the workplace.
- Is discouraged from accepting gifts from stakeholders.
- Is expected to avoid letting any matter, whether personal, financial or other interests, hinder their capability or willingness to perform their job and duties in college.
- Must refrain from any act of sexual harassment towards colleagues, teachers and students. Any such act is strictly prohibited and appropriate investigation and action will be taken by the authorities in such cases.
